Sabc's 'generations: The Legacy' In Limbo Amid Renewal Contract Delay

Production for long-running SABC soapie Generations: The Legacy will not resume on Monday, 7 April 2025 as scheduled, Sunday World reports .
This is because the public broadcaster has not yet issued a new contract for the soapies next season, according to a letter from producers to actors.
Contract delay for Generations: The LegacyGenerations: The Legacy is currently on a production break that was set to end on Friday 4 April.
Due to circumstances completely beyond our control, and despite our best and ongoing efforts, we are currently in a situation where we have no choice but to extend the production break as of Monday, April 7, the producers said in the letter.
"In other words, we will not resume recording on Monday, April 7. At this point, we cannot say exactly how long we will need to pause production. But we have been given many assurances by the SABC that the contract will definitely be issued. Also, that this is being done as quickly as possible.
However, the actors will not be paid from Monday. For the moment, their last payment will be for the week ending Friday, 4 April.
SABC is reportedly experiencing a financial crisis. Earlier this week, City Press reported that the broadcaster had not paid producers of Muvhango , Skeem Saam and Generations: The Legacy .
The state-owned company has suffered heavy losses over the years. However, it narrowed its net loss before interest and tax from R827 million in the 2023 financial year to R192 million in the 2024 financial year.
A big contributor to its losses is the high level of non-compliance with regard to annual TV licence fee payments, with the evasion rate reaching a high of 85.8 in 2024. The rise of global streaming services has also cut its audience share, further impacting revenue.
