Sabc Soapie 'muvhango' Faces Uncertain Future As Contract Nears End
Popular SABC soap opera Muvhango faces an uncertain future once again as its current contract approaches its expiry in July this year.
The long-running drama series is now in its 26th season and airs on SABC 2 DStv channel 192 from Monday to Friday at 21:00-21:30.
In July last year, the state broadcaster pulled the soapie off air for over two weeks without warning, sparking anger from fans. Fortunately, it reintroduced it with a new logo and opening sequence.
New characters, such as iconic actress Leleti Khumalo, also joined the series.
"We are dedicated to staying true to our roots while embracing change, and we are excited to present our audience with a Muvhango that reflects the rich diversity and compelling narratives of modern South Africa, executive producer Duma Ndlovu said at the time.
Muvhango future uncertainHowever, it now appears that the soapies future is not entirely secure. In response to a query from entertainment commentator Phil Mphela , SABC failed to confirm whether the show will get a contract extension or not.
The SABC can confirm that only one season of Muvhango is currently contracted and that the current contract is set to end on 31 July 2025. The SABC cannot comment on the future of the programme at this stage," the broadcasters head of communications Mmoni Ngubane said on Tuesday 18 February.
Mphela had earlier reported that the series will be cancelled. I'm reliably informed that the show will not be renewed beyond the current season, he wrote on X.
Despite the fanfare of the relaunch last year and other efforts, such as shooting a few episodes on location away from the studio, the series is reportedly underperforming in terms of viewership.
