Saa Pilots Strike Could Affect Festive Season Operations
Pilots affiliated to the South African Airways Pilots Association and the National Transport Movement Pilots Forum have downed tools over a wage dispute.
Workers are demanding a 15 percent wage increase as well as benefits while the employer, SAA, is offering eight percent.
The strike action is likely to affect flight operations ahead of the festive season. The Associations Captain, Sibusiso Nxumalo says they are struggling as most workers got up to 50 percent salary cuts during the business rescue process.
"We actually deeply regret having to undergo this position but this is the last resort that we had to push for us to have a meaningful discussion with the company. So at this stage, were hoping that the company tries and gets us back to the table, so we can engage with this further cease or potential suspension until a later date, even getting an agreement with the company that will put us back in those aircraft. We want to fly. We do not want to be out striking. We are aware that all the international flights will not be able to get off the ground. We are aware that most regional flights will be able to get off the ground. And weve just got word that the company is actually seeking to charter other airlines to assist in their operations."
