Rumours Become Real Toyota Officially Confirms Celicas Return
It appears that Toyota is planning to bring back the iconic Celica nameplate before the end of this decade, as confirmed by a recent comment from Toyota's Vice-President. The Celica, a beloved nameplate that had a long history spanning seven generations and 36 years, was indirectly replaced by the GR86 in 2012. While the Celica was discontinued after 2006, it has remained a topic of speculation due to a trademark filing in the United States seven years ago, which hinted at a possible return.
This speculation gained further momentum when Tetsuya Tada, the former boss of Toyota Gazoo Racing, mentioned at the Geneva Motor Show that Toyota aimed to revive the "three brothers"-the MR2, Celica, and Supra-as soon as possible. Tada was instrumental in the return of the Supra in 2019, fueling expectations that Toyota might be ready to bring back these classic models.
In addition to the Celica, there's also talk of the MR2 making a comeback, possibly as a front-engine sports coupe inspired by the Concept Sports EV. This concept, which was part of Toyota's broader plan to roll out 16 new electric vehicles, suggests that Toyota could integrate the MR2 into its electric vehicle strategy.
While details on the Celica's return are still scarce, the ongoing rumors and recent statements indicate that it's very likely to happen in the near future. Whether it will be an electric model, like the MR2, or a more traditional sports car, remains to be seen.
