Robotic Technology To Be Used At Bloemfontein Hospital
The Universitas Academic Hospital in Bloemfontein, in the Free State, is set to start using a first of its kind robotic technology that will make surgeries much easier. In partnership with the Free State Health Department and the University of the Free State, the hospital has launched the advanced Versius Robotic surgery system.
Unlike traditional surgery, which requires large incisions, robotic surgery enables doctors to perform operations with smaller cuts, reduced pain and less scarring.
"It will allow us to be precise. the human eye has its own limits but with this camera system it allows you to zoom in and it also has an angled camera, so it allows you to look behind structures, it allows your vision to reach smaller places," Head of Surgery at Universitas hospital, Dr Leony Fourie explains.
The Free State Health Department says its working towards procuring the advanced Versius Robotic surgery machines that can be placed in various facilities.
Currently, the province has one machine in Universitas Academic Hospital. Health MEC Monyatso Mahlatsi says the department wants to move to an era where doctors can work remotely and a patient can be operated on while the specialist is sitting in another town.
