Residents Of Dobsonville Set For Power-less Christmas

Frustrated elderly residents of Dobsonville, wards 47 and 48 in Soweto, Johannesburg, are facing the prospect of a power-less Christmas as they continue to endure ongoing electricity outages. Despite multiple meetings with Eskom officials in Diepkloof, the community remains without power.

In a demonstration of their anger, residents staged a protest outside Eskoms Megawatt Park in Sandton, demanding that the power be restored to their homes. Nearly 100 households have been without electricity for the past seven months, with no resolution in sight.

Elderly residents, some using crutches or oxygen tanks, are particularly distressed by the situation. They have been forced to spend extra money on food and cope with cold baths due to the power cuts. Their patience is running out, and they are calling for Eskom to take action.

"Weve got people who are sick, some are asthmatic, and its a real problem. We also spend a lot of money on gas and food because we can't store anything in the fridges. It's a daily struggle. For those on grants, like the R2,000 we get, its not enough to cover these extra costs, and by the end of the week, we have nothing left," said one elder.

Another resident added, "We are struggling. We have to spend even more money on food, and with the grant we get, its never enough. Eskom isnt fixing the electricity, and we have to live with our children now."

The communitys frustration is mounting, as they continue to face hardships without a clear solution from Eskom.
