Renaming Of Sandton Drive Under Public Consultation: Morero

City of Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero says the renaming of Sandton Drive is still under public consultation. Morero was addressing members of the media in Johannesburg, where he touched on a number of issues.

In 2018, the city approved the renaming of the street to Leila Khaled Drive. Khaled is a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

The US considers the PFLP a terrorist organisation. Khaled participated in the hijacking of an airline in 1969 and the attempted hijacking of a plane in 1970.

Morero says they will carefully go through public submissions while considering the sensitivity of renaming the street.

"The city of Johannesburg reaffirms its commitment to diplomatic sensitivity in the Sandton Drive renaming process. The city acknowledges public discourse regarding the proposed renaming of Sandton Drive and emphasises its dedication to a thorough approach. While responding to public participation outcomes, the city is committed to engaging with relevant stakeholders to assess diplomatic implications before any decision is finalised."
