Ramaphosa Speaks To Elon Musk About 'misinformation' - To No Effect

President Cyril Ramaphosa has spoken to South African-born US billionaire Elon Musk on issues of misinformation and distortions about South Africa.

However, a spot check on Musks X profile reveals that he is still reposting claims about South Africa that have scant evidence backing them.

Ramaphosa talks to Elon Musk

Yesterday, 3 February 2025, President Cyril Ramaphosa spoke to Elon Musk on issues of misinformation and distortions about South Africa, the Presidency said in a post on X on Tuesday, 4 February.

In the process, the President reiterated South Africas constitutionally embedded values of the respect for the rule of law, justice, fairness and equality.

This follows Musks comment on Ramaphosas response to US President Donald Trump on Monday. Quoting Ramaphosas post on X, he asked, Why do you have openly racist ownership laws?

Musk was seemingly referring to pro-transformation laws such as Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment B-BBEE, whose aim is to advance economic transformation and enhance the economic participation of black people in the South African economy, according to the government.

Some groups, like AfriForum, have labelled pro-transformation laws as race laws and racially discriminatory. Others, like the African National Congress, argue that they are necessary to address past injustices and promote economic inclusion of previously disadvantaged groups.

Little effect

It seems that Ramaphosas phone call to Musk on misinformation and distortions about South Africa had little effect on the SpaceX owner.

On Tuesday, he replied Yes to a post that claimed, without evidence, that white people are being persecuted for their race in their own country.

He also reposted a post by Mario Nawfal that claimed, South Africa's expropriation without compensation law is stripping white farmers of their land while racial quotas now extend to water access and economic opportunities.
