Ramaphosa Eyes Reset As Us Tensions Rise

ramaphosa eyes reset as us tensions rise

Despite escalating diplomatic tensions, President Cyril Ramaphosa remains determined to mend relations with the United States while safeguarding South Africa's interests.

According to News24 , the expulsion of South African Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool has added to the strain between Pretoria and Washington, but Ramaphosa's administration is pushing for constructive engagement.

Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya acknowledged the challenges but insisted Pretoria would not be deterred from pursuing diplomatic and economic ties with the US.

Washington's decision to declare Rasool persona non grata followed his remarks at a webinar, where he criticised President Donald Trump's administration. The move intensified existing friction, fuelled by Trump's executive order offering refugee status to Afrikaners and his withdrawal of USAID from South Africa.

Despite these setbacks, Ramaphosa remains focused on fostering dialogue. His government is prepared to navigate the political turbulence and explore avenues to restore stability in the bilateral relationship.
