President Cyril Ramaphosa has congratulated Namibian President-elect Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah following her victory in the recent elections. In his message, Ramaphosa highlighted that Nandi-Ndaitwah's election as the fifth President of Namibia and the first woman to hold this office is a significant achievement and a testament to the power of democracy in transforming societies.
Nandi-Ndaitwah won 57 percent of the votes, extending the ruling SWAPO party's 34-year reign since leading Namibia to independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990. Ramaphosa expressed his eagerness to strengthen the relationship between South Africa and Namibia, with a focus on deepening the shared history and fostering greater understanding between the two nations.
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan also offered her congratulations, calling Nandi-Ndaitwah's victory historic.
