psira responds on amendments to firearms regulations for security firms

The Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority PSIRA has addressed mounting apprehensions regarding the recent draft amendments to the Private Security Industry Firearms Regulations, Cape town Etc reports.

In a statement released following the amendments published by the Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, on 28 March 2025, PSIRA encourages public engagement amid concerns that these regulations may impede the operations of security firms.

With the proposed regulations now open for public and stakeholder comment until 25 April 2025, PSIRA has welcomed the significant interest from both the public and the industry.

The authority believes this engagement will provide vital insights that will help shape the final regulations. As South Africas private security sector employs over 600,000 registered security officers and is valued at approximately R50 billion, it plays an integral role in crime prevention and public safety, serving as a critical component of the nations economic landscape.

PSIRA has emphasised its commitment to ensuring that any regulatory changes will not hinder the industrys functional capabilities. These proposed amendments are part of a broader effort to strengthen compliance and oversight, PSiRA remarked, citing an industry needs analysis as pivotal to this initiative.
