Psa Raises Alarm Over Water Shortage At Mmametlhake Hospital
The Public Servants Association of South Africa PSA in Mpumalanga has raised concerns about an ongoing water shortage at Mmametlhake Hospital, where taps have been dry since January 2, 2025.
Despite the dispatch of Jojo tanks to the facility, the pumps are non-functional, leaving nurses to manually carry water in buckets from the tanks to different wards.
PSA Acting Provincial Manager Flip Van Der Walt highlights the risks posed by the situation.
At this stage, the employee is saying they must carry water, and we are saying that is unsafe. What we have done now is we have also reported this to the Department of Labor and Employment to get health inspectors to go and inspect the hospital. If need be, then patients will have to be transferred to another hospital until they have sorted out the water problem, Van Der Walt states.
The PSA has called for urgent intervention to address the issue, citing potential dangers to the community, patients, and hospital employees.
