Proteas captain Temba Bavuma has expressed confidence in Ryan Rickelton and Dane Paterson as South Africa prepares to face Sri Lanka in the second Test at St Georges Park in Gqeberha, starting Thursday.
Bavuma confirmed that the team would replace the injured Gerald Coetzee and Wiaan Mulder with Rickelton and Paterson. The Proteas had several options to consider before the match, particularly when deciding who would replace the all-rounder Mulder.
Mulder had been in excellent form with both bat and ball, showing the promise he had as a young player. Several players were in contention for Mulder's spot, including spinning all-rounder Senuran Muthusamy, rookie left-arm pacer Kwena Maphaka, and Rickelton.
Ultimately, coach Shukri Conrad decided to replace "Mulder the batter" with Rickelton for the Test.
"We're going in with three seamers and a frontline spinner, with the rest being the batters," Bavuma explained ahead of the match.
