Private Planes Cannot Take Off From Airstrips Without Clearance - Keyamo
Festus Keyamo, Nigerias Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has emphasized that private planes cannot take off or land at private airstrips without obtaining prior government clearance. In an interview with Channels TV on Sunday, Keyamo clarified the country's strict airspace regulations.
Keyamos statement follows a recent call from the House of Representatives, which, two months ago, requested the revocation of licenses granted to private airstrip owners-particularly David Oyedepo-amid allegations that these airstrips were being used for illegal activities, including the importation of arms by terrorism sponsors.
Addressing security concerns, Keyamo explained that all procedures for private aircraft are tightly regulated to ensure proper authorization before any aircraft, including planes and drones, can leave or enter Nigeria. He outlined the process, stating that:
- Private aircraft must first land at an international airport, where Customs, Immigration, and NDLEA officials will conduct their checks before allowing any departure.
- For aircraft flying out of the country, they must follow the same procedure, landing at an international airport and undergoing the required security and customs procedures.
Keyamo emphasized that no plane or aircraft can use a private airstrip for any unauthorized purpose without first obtaining clearance from the authorities.
