Prasa Held Liable For Injuries Sustained By Woman Fleeing From Attackers

The Passenger Rail Agency of SA Prasa, has been mandated to pay damages following a claim that involved a woman suffering serious injuries after jumping from a moving train in an attempt to escape attackers on the transport system, Cape town Etc reports.

The 27-year-old woman was travelling on a train between Cape Town and Elsies River in 2020.

The woman claims that she boarded the train around 8pm and jumped through the open doors after three perpetrators stabbed the commuter who had been standing next to her.

The impending attack forced the woman to jump off the train between the Vasco and Goodwood train stations. The incident resulted in her sustaining a skull fracture, a cerebral contusion and blunt trauma to her right shoulder, back and neck.

The woman argued that her injuries were the result of negligence on the part of Prasa and its employees, as she alleged that Prasa failed to ensure the safety of its passengers by lacking critical security guards on the trains as well as at stations.
