Port Of Beira Gets New Reefer Yard

Cornelder de Moambique (CDM) has constructed a new reefer yard at the Port of Beira to meet the rising demand for seafood and citrus exports.

The newly constructed yard, with a capacity of 64 reefer plugs, is located conveniently near the quays to help alleviate pressure on the existing yard, which currently holds 144 reefer plugs.

CDM said in a statement this week that it had constructed the yard to meet the steadily growing demand for traditional seafood and citrus fruit exports that were increasingly using the Beira Corridor.

In addition, the main reefer yard will undergo an expansion. By the end of this year, its capacity will increase to 224 plugs, with another 64 plugs scheduled for installation in 2025. This will bring the total reefer capacity at the Port of Beira to 288 plugs in 2024 and 352 by 2025.

With these expansions, Beira Port is well positioned to meet the growing demands for reefer cargo, both imports and exports, for the hinterland, the company said.

CDM said managing increased volumes was being made easier by the recent launch of the Reefer Monitoring System (RMS), which enables real-time remote monitoring and management of containers through the terminal operating system, ensuring optimal temperature control and safety.

These improvements are part of our ongoing strategy to enhance the Port of Beiras facilities, ensuring were always prepared to meet the evolving needs of our customers and partners, CDM said.

CDM is a private consortium, formed through a partnership between the Mozambican public company Porto e Caminhos de Ferro de Moambique (CFM Ports and Railways of Mozambique) and Cornelder Group.

The consortium has been operating the container and general cargo terminals in the port of Beira since October 1998 and is one of the most important providers of the port services in Mozambique. It is currently cited as one of the key bases for transport logistics in the country.
