Police Take Steps To Fight Crime The Crime-ridden Barberton Area

The South African Police Service SAPS has taken steps towards tackling criminal activities in the crime-ridden Barberton area in Mpumalanga . Deputy Minister of Police Cassel Mathale is leading a crime prevention campaign in the area that is battling with gangsterism and gun attacks amongst others.

It is reported that the gangs in Barberton have now shifted their focus to recruiting school learners.

Mathale has engaged with learners in the area at the Kamhola High School in Umjindini.

Here in Barberton, we will ,of course as part of Operation Shanela that we have started last year, intensify it here, specifically to deal with illegal firearms in the area. We are also discussing options of looking at a possibility of doing amnesty to encourage community members to bring out arms that they have used, both legal and illegal firearms as our drive to remove guns from the streets, says Mathale.

Meanwhile, some Barberton residents are hopeful that the interventions will bring peace to their community.
