police minister hits out at operation vala umgodi calls it an error

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has acknowledged significant shortcomings in Operation Vala Umgodi, which was launched to address illegal mining activities in communities. During a feedback session in Stilfontein, North West, Mchunu admitted that the operation failed to take into account the socioeconomic challenges faced by communities, especially those involved in illegal mining. He emphasized that poverty and unemployment are likely at the root of the issue, which compels individuals to engage in illegal activities, including illegal mining.

Mchunu pointed out that many illegal miners in the area are from outside South Africa, and there are ongoing efforts to engage with the relevant embassies to address this. He suggested that, in addition to curbing unlawful activities, addressing the root causes such as poverty and lack of employment opportunities is essential. He described the oversight in not considering these factors as an "omission," acknowledging that errors were made during the crafting of the operation.

At the same time, locals in Stilfontein expressed frustration with the slow progress of government plans to assist those working illegally in the mines. Since mid-August, more than 1,200 illegal miners have surfaced after the operation's intensification, which involved cutting off food and water supplies. The government's inability to offer alternative solutions or support for these miners has sparked concern within the community.
