police cant confirm drivers killing in sophiatown linked to gangs

Police say they cannot at this stage confirm if the gunning down of a scholar transport driver at Sophiatown in Soweto this morning could be linked to gangsterism and violent crime in the area.

Police are investigating a murder case after a 60-year-old scholar transport driver was shot after dropping off school kids.

The three suspects fled on foot. Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo says it is still early to confirm that the incident is related to gangsterism.

"For this particular incident we cannot confirm to say it is related to gangsterism. But we got our anti-gang unit that is operating here and patrols day and night. And I must say that we had some breakthroughs when it comes to gangsterism. We have got people that we have arrested and some are in court. Last week, we recovered three firearms and arrested suspects. And we have people that were arrested with drugs."
