Police Blamed For Not Doing Enough To Enforce Laws At Enyobeni Tavern
The evidence leader in the Enyobeni Inquest sitting in the East London Regional Court, has accused the police of not doing enough to ensure compliance at the tavern.
This despite numerous complaints by residents of unruly patrons and loud music at the establishment.
Advocate Luvuyo Vena added that the owners seem to have gotten away with a number of transgressions in contravention of stipulations in the liquor license they held.
A police officer attached to the Scenery Park Police Station, Thabisa Kondile, has admitted to the court that there were failures from their side in ensuring that compliance was adhered to.
She cited a lack of capacity and limited resources as the reasons. She further told the court she had no authority to close down the tavern as it is the Eastern Cape Liquor Board which has that authority.
