The group of learners from Pinelands High School in Cape Town, who were involved in an alleged racist incident, have been instructed to apologise and attend various workshops as punishment for their conduct.

A video went viral last month showing pupils at the school auctioning off their black classmates, who were confined to a cage.

Western Cape Education Department Spokesperson, Bronagh Hammond says the decisions behind the sanctions were made by School Governing Body (SGB) as they finalised the disciplinary process.

Hammond says the school has indicated its commitment to continuing its journey in promoting non-racialism and diversity.

She says, "The sanctions are restorative in nature and include participating in various workshops and learning programmes, written assignments as well as community service."
