Parliament's Rebuild Costs Soar In Scandalous Delay

The rebuilding of Parliament following the devastating fire of January 2022 has taken a controversial turn.
The Cape Argus has reported that the costs of the rebuild are now exceeding R3 billion, far above the initial R2 billion estimate.
The escalation has raised eyebrows as MPs question the transparency and efficiency of the process.
In a recent parliamentary session, officials addressed the sharp rise in costs, explaining that the initial R2 billion allocation was based on preliminary assessments but did not account for the complexity of the reconstruction.
According to Xolile George, secretary to Parliament, it was only after contractors were brought on board that the true cost, now at R3.3 billion, became clear.
