The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) has paid close to a billion rand in fraudulent liability claims to various service providers.
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) revealed this during its briefing to Parliaments Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA).
The SIU updated the committee on its investigation into allegations of maladministration and corruption at PRASA.
Senior management says that the bulk of these fraudulent claims relate to procurement processes within the entity, in particular, the procurement of the new locomotives.
The report also highlighted that in some instances, there was collusion between former senior officials and some of the service providers.
