More than 500 crime incidents were committed using firearms between the period April to June this year in Gauteng.
This emerged during a briefing by Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni, speaking to the Gauteng Legislatures Portfolio Committee on Community Safety in Johannesburg.
Member of the Legislature, Bishop Dulton Adams has called on the police to investigate the easy access and availability of firearms.
Guns cannot be so freely available. Where do they get them from? [It] needs to be investigated very seriously. For me, when it comes to crime fighting between communities, working together and collaboration between SAPS and the JMPD, there is no collaboration there. Do they talk to each other? Are they planning together? And we need both of these policing structures to work, especially in the areas where this gun violence is so bad and the murders take place, Dulton.
