City Power in Johannesburg has emphasised the importance of access to electricity, saying its essential for socio-economic development.
The power utility says its expanding its electricity network in Johannesburgs informal settlements to safeguard human rights.
It says despite limited resources, it has exceeded its target to electrify over 2 000 households in informal settlements across Johannesburg.
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena says they are exploring alternative energy sources to meet the needs of residents.
In the 2023/24 financial year, City Power successfully electrified several informal settlements, including Amarasta in Alexandra, Roodepoort, Slovo Park, Veggieland, Princess Plot, Matholesville, and Kliptown. A total of 2 675 households were connected, well above the initial target of 2 500, as reflected in the Auditor-Generals report and our annual performance review report. We are continuing to make headway in electrifying more communities through conventional and alternative energy sources. Our mission to electrify informal settlements underscores our belief that everyone deserves access to safe and reliable energy.
