Outa To Study Electoral Reform Report Before Commenting
The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse OUTA has stated that it will wait for the report and recommendations from the Electoral Reform Consultation Panel, expected in May 2025, before providing further comments. The panel was established to explore the possibility of changing South Africa's current electoral system, which uses a closed list method.
The panel concluded receiving public submissions on the proposal for a constituency-based electoral system in October 2024. Dr. Rachel Fischer, OUTA's Parliamentary Engagement and Research Manager, emphasized that OUTA strongly supports electoral reform to enhance South Africa's democracy. She noted that the organization shares the principles outlined by the panel, which include inclusivity, fairness, accountability, and transparency. OUTA sees electoral reform as a critical opportunity to redesign the electoral system to allow for better inclusion of independent candidates.
