Orlando Pirates Claim Controversial Soweto Derby Triumph

Orlando Pirates secured a controversial 1-0 win over Soweto Derby rivals Kaizer Chiefs in a Betway Premiership clash at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The tense clash looked set to end in a stalemate, but a controversial late penalty for the Buccaneers which was converted in incredible style by Patrick Maswanganyi handed the team in black all three points and allowed them to cut the gap to leaders Mamelodi Sundowns to three points.

As for the Amakhosi, this sixth defeat in 15 league matches leaves them in fifth place, nine points adrift of their opponents, having played three games more than the top two.

Chiefs had a glorious chance to claim the lead as early as the second minute, as a mistake in the Pirates defence allowed Pule Mmodi to race through on goal, but in his desire to round Sipho Chaine he allowed the goalkeeper just enough of a sight of the ball to make a vital challenge.

Pirates first clear chance arrived midway through the first half, as Relebohile Mofokeng burst into space in the penalty area, but his attempt to cut back onto his left foot allowed Ignacio Miguel to sweep the ball clear.
