Opposition Parties Express Disapproval Of Mahikeng Smart City Project

Some opposition parties in the North West's provincial capital Mahikeng have expressed strong reservations amid a tug-of-war in the province over the multi-billion rand Mahikeng Smart City development.

The Provincial Legislatures Portfolio Committee on Human Settlements earlier called for an immediate halt to all mega and smart city projects, and the precautionary suspension of the CEO of North West Housing Corporation.

There are concerns about rampant waste.

Democratic Alliance provincial leader Freddy Sonakile and Economic Freedom Fighters provincial secretary Papiki Bauile oppose the project.

The event could not go through. There seems to have been no consultation with the traditional council that was responsible god for the land. Apparently, there is also a pending court case that the department and the tribal council are undergoing. Another case of wasted millions that could have gone towards assisting young people. That could have gone to trying to improve the situation of North West, Sonakile says.
