Opposition parties in the North West have called for action to be taken against the Moses Kotane Local Municipality Speaker Gugulethu Mtshali, who allegedly disrupted a council meeting on Monday.

Chaos erupted over two parallel council meetings. One meeting was apparently called by Mtshali, while the other by the Municipal Manager Mokopane Letsoalo. Mtshali was seen, in a video making rounds on social media, interrupting a special council seating chaired by the municipal manager.

Opposition parties in the province say it is unacceptable for councillors at municipalities across the province to disregard the legislation that governs municipalities. Parties represented in the Moses Kotane Local Municipality council say they expect the speaker as the custodian of the council to enforce the rules of the council instead of violating them.

The Economic Freedom Fighters EFF wants Mtshali to face consequences for her actions.

"In this case, we have seen this Speaker disrupting the council which was concerned by councillors and that is actually a show of disrespect for the rules of order and this Speaker must face the consequences of disrupting that municipality. We must make sure that the committee which was established to investigate the behaviour of the Speaker is given that opportunity to investigate and the findings and recommendations of that are tabled before council and are implemented," says EFF NW Secretary Papiki Babuile.
