The National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa NUMSA in the Free State says the late payment of salaries, failure to make third-party contributions, and denying maternity leave remain huge challenges in the private security sector .
Numsas Chris Soetsane says their intervention is limited as many security guards are not unionised.
It is quite a big problem, especially around the area of the Free State. We have experienced that it becomes a huge problem where our members and the workers are not paid timeously their salary and their employers disregard all the laws that are there to regulate them in the sector. So that is quite a huge challenge that we are faced with.
Numsa also says its been inundated with complaints about some Free State security companies failure to comply with labour regulations.
The unions spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola says some companies even deduct what are supposed to be provident fund and medical insurance contributions from workers. However, they dont pay over the funds to the third party.
