A 22-year-old male student has been killed and 10 more people injured after a suspected drunk taxi driver plowed into them during the early hours of today at Nelson Mandela University Campus in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape.

Police say reports indicate that the incident took place during a gathering reported as being a welcoming celebration for first-year students.

The University SRC confirmed the incident, saying the students were heading to the shuttles to leave campus when the taxi driver drove into them and then attempted to flee.

Police spokesperson Andre Beetge says the driver was subsequently arrested by the police.

It is further alleged that a speeding taxi Toyota Quantum then drove into the crowd, killing one 22-year-old male student and injuring 10 others. Of the 10 injured transported to the hospital, two were in critical condition, another six in serious condition, and two with minor injuries. The driver, a 24-year-old male, was arrested, and the vehicle was impounded for further investigation.
