Nigeria suffered a second successive defeat in the womens football tournament at the 2024 Olympic Games, as they were beaten 1-0 by Spain at Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes on Sunday evening.
The result, secured by a late strike from La Rojas Alexia Putellas saw the 2023 World Cup winners go to the top of Group C on six points, three clear of Japan and Brazil, and secure a spot in the quarterfinals.
As for the Super Falcons, they are bottom of the standings on zero points after back-to-back losses.
Spain dominated possession from the outset and pushed Nigeria deep into their own territory, though clear chances were not exactly flowing for the reigning world champions.
In fact Nigeria had one of the better chances of the first half on 23 minutes when a long ball from goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie resulted in a chance for Esther Okoronkwo, but the strikers shot on goal was saved by Spains Cata Coll.
