Nigeria Eyes First Chan Triumph After Win Over Ghana
Nigeria and Ghana Share Goalless Draw in CHAN Qualifier
Nigeria held Ghana to a 0-0 draw in Accra on Sunday, giving them a strong chance of securing a historic African Nations Championship CHAN qualifying victory over their arch-rivals.
The two teams have faced off twice before in two-legged eliminators for the tournament, which is restricted to players plying their trade in their home countries, with Ghana coming out on top both times. In 2009, Ghana won 3-2 on aggregate, while in the last edition, they triumphed on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
In Accra, Ghana started the game with early pressure, but the first leg of this second-round encounter became a cautious affair, with both sides largely playing in midfield and creating few opportunities. Nigeria came closest to breaking the deadlock when Abubakar Adamu's shot hit the woodwork in the second half.
The draw leaves Nigeria with a chance to seal their first-ever CHAN qualification when the return leg is played.
