Ngos Concerned About Miners Who Remain Underground At Stilfontein
While many celebrate the festive season, MACUA-WAMUA and other humanitarian organisations have called on faith-based leaders and organisations to show spiritual solidarity with the remaining miners underground in Stilfontein in the North West .
The organisations say the situation in Stilfontein echoes the horrors of Marikana, where 34 protesting miners were killed.
Spokesperson for the Stilfontein Crisis Committee, Sabelo Mnguni has accused the government of disregarding the lives of those still underground.
"Their plight reflects the deep failures of our society, the mines, the state and the courts failing to uphold basic human dignity and rights. This tragedy echoes the horrors of Marikana, where greed and disregard for life created one of South Africa's darkest chapters. We vowed never again, yet here we are, witnessing the same reckless indifference toward the most vulnerable among us. This time of the year we call for solidarity and care, yet miners remain abandoned, dehumanised by the reckless action of mining companies, the state and Operation Vala Umgodi."
