Nehawu Welcomes Investigation Into Sabs

The National Education Health and Allied Workers Union Nehawu has welcomed Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Taus launch of a forensic investigation into the affairs of the South African Bureau of Standards SABS.

The bureaus management is facing allegations of mismanagement and financial misconduct. The management has disputed the allegations.

The minister intervened after whistleblowers approached him and Nehawu staged a protest .

The unions Zolani Masoleng says the investigation is long overdue.

"Nothing positive is happening there. They lost accreditation status of the cement lab last year. Its also another example of this incompetence they have lost customers. They have not brought in much needed revenue and yet they are unreasonably insisting that they should be staying in those positions. On what basis? We really do not understand. So, its a chaos, that institution. It will be good that while that investigation is continuing, the acting CEO and some of his executives are put on suspension pending that investigation. This is particularly important so that those who have information are not afraid of victimisation in terms of coming forth," says Masoleng.
