ncc investigates 18 kzn companies over expired food sales

The National Consumer Commission NCC is currently investigating 18 companies in KwaZulu-Natal for allegedly selling expired food products. This investigation was prompted by complaints from consumers and a visit to a company in Verulam, north of Durban, last month. During the visit, the company was found repackaging cakes and snacks with expired dates and selling other items without proper labels.

NCC spokesperson Phetho Ntaba stated, "We were here last month to conduct market monitoring, and of course, we were not happy with what we saw. We must have an investigation or directive to say we are investigating a supplier, and we are here today to issue that directive." Ntaba explained that in some cases, the NCC issues compliance notices, allowing companies to fix minor issues like removing expired goods from shelves or properly labeling items. The specifics of the actions taken depend on the severity of the violations.

The NCC's investigation aims to ensure consumer safety in the province and hold businesses accountable for selling expired or improperly labeled food products.
