Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah of Namibia's ruling Swapo party has been elected as the country's first female president, according to results released by the Electoral Commission of Namibia on Tuesday. Nandi-Ndaitwah, 72, is currently the vice president of Namibia.
Her victory marks a significant milestone, as it extends Swapo's 34-year hold on power, following the country's independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990. Nandi-Ndaitwah secured approximately 57 of the valid votes in the presidential race, surpassing the 50 threshold required to win.
