The N2 has been closed to traffic near the Joyner Road on-ramp near Isipingo in the south of Durban.
This follows the collapse of the bridge on the south bound carriageway.
Motorists have been urged to use alternative routes.
SANRALs Trevor Zumani says they have dispatched a team of engineers to assess the extent of the damage.
Right now, what we are doing, we brought our structural engineers who are our specialist in this region, to do the assessment so that we can see a way forward whether its really what we are suspecting or whether its a bigger problem all the way to the foundation. At the moment its a bit premature because there could be two scenarios, its the pier itself from the foundation has settled which is a bigger problem which will take longer to fix but if its just a bearing under the bridge itself. There are bearings that is holding the bridge. So, if its just the bearings its a quicker fix but still it will take some science into it to fix. So, Im just waiting for full assessment from our specialist and then we take it from there.
