A Northern Cape man, who was found guilty of swindling a 40-year-old man out of his pension money, has been handed a suspended sentence and ordered to pay monthly instalments to the victim.

The De Aar Regional Court found Michael Sebegala guilty of scamming the complainant out of over R360 000, which he claimed he was going to invest and double.

Sebegala subsequently disappeared and bought a car with some of the money before he was arrested.

Provincial police spokesperson Molefi Shemane elaborates, 34-year-old Michael Sebegala entered into a plea bargain agreement with the state and was convicted and sentenced in the De Aar Regional Court for fraud. Sebegala was sentenced to eight years imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years. The accused was ordered to pay R10 000 immediately to the complainant and R5 000 each month and to hand over a vehicle that he purchased with the complainants money.
