The Department of Education in Mpumalanga has launched an investigation after 21 learners from Marhagi Secondary School in Verena in Mpumalanga fell ill and had to be hospitalized after complaining of headaches, stomach cramps, and some began vomiting.

It is believed that the learners started experiencing the symptoms after consuming atchar they had bought from a street vendor.

All learners have since been discharged.

Despite the traumatic events of Wednesday, learners at Marhagi Secondary School resumed their studies.

The Mpumalanga education says necessary support and counselling services have been provided to the affected learners.
