Gender-based violence GBV against women and children continues to terrorise the community of Nqweba formerly known as Kirkwood in the Eastern Cape.
The elderly in the township of Moses Mabhida say they live in constant fear, following the brutal attack on 68-year-old Nontsokolo Jacobs, allegedly by her neighbour last week.
She says although the matter was reported to the police and the perpetrator arrested, he was later released on bail.
"When I turned my back and walked towards my house, he attacked me and hit me with a pole on my back. Now when I cough it hurts. All I want is to leave this place and live in a safer space. I've been applying to get a house, but I've been waiting for so long."
Although the small town is the centre of citrus production during this harvest season, GBV and crime have spiralled out of control, according to one resident.
