First Deputy Secretary-General of the ANC Nomvula Mokonyane is calling for patience and calm as protests are underway in Mozambique. This follows the election results that hailed Frelimo victorious with a 70 majority, which has since seen pushback from opposition parties.
Mokonyane says that that there should be a call for respect of the rule of law to ensure that the official announcement is made peacefully.
"We were in Mozambique. We saw what happened and we believe that, of course, that just like in any other election, it is not easy for everyone to embrace the outcome. But what we must really guard against is a situation where the outcome of the elections or the delay of towards the official announcement is used to cast aspersions. Lets leave the Mozambicans to make their official announcement and everybody must live with it," she says.
Nomvula Mokonyane on elections in Mozambique, Botswana and Namibia Law Enforcement Agencies at the Lebombo port of entry say they have temporarily suspended the processing of people and cargo due to intensified protests.
Border Management Authority Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato says this decision was taken to protect property and the people.
