A moderate underwater earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 was detected in the Southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge on Tuesday morning.

The tremor, recorded at 8:05am on 1 April 2025, struck at a depth of 10 kilometres beneath the surface, with its epicentre located at 46.1S and 14.2W, approximately 3 000 kilometres from South Africa.

Despite the quake's strength, no tsunami warning has been issued, according to data from the United States Geological Survey USGS.

Angelo Ricardo Hoorn , who shared the information on the Severe Weather and Information Centre SA Facebook group, assured the public that this is not an April Fool's prank, emphasising the importance of staying informed about seismic activity.
