minister appeals to prepaid power users to upgrade before deadline

Minister of Electricity and Energy Kgosientsho Ramokgopa is appealing to households to upgrade their prepaid electricity meters before the November 24th deadline.

Over two-million households that receive their electricity from Eskom and municipalities are yet to be migrated onto the new system through prepaid meter Key Revision Numbers KRN programme.

Electricity entities will stop dispensing KRN1 electricity tokens, thus making the old metering system inactive.

The minister gave a briefing also providing an update on the finalisation of the Integrated Resource Plan 2023.

Theres a time stamp on this prepaid meter. So, the point I want to make is that it is up to Sunday and thats when we are expected to ensure that everyone is recorded. Now people are coming across and say no, but can you extend it? Its not extendable. Thats the point I want to make. It is like technical, we cant extend it, so its a hard stop. Then you are sitting with a different problem, so if you replenish your units based on the absolute system, then you can load it. Now, when we record theres no need for us to substitute the meter but beyond the 24th we have to physically remove the meter, and that comes at a cost.
