mec meets e cape farmers affected by footandmouth outbreak

Eastern Cape Agriculture MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe has met with farm owners, affected by the foot and mouth disease outbreak, in the Kouga Municipality in Humansdorp

Since the outbreak earlier this year, 16 farms have tested positive - 14 in Kouga and two in East London.

Kontsiwe is working to curb the diseases spread. Over 38 000 cows have been affected and more than 26 000 have been vaccinated in the affected areas.

We sent our vets to all the farms where they visited the cattle and examined them. They are treating them, hence measures to quarantine them and restrict movement in and out of the area so that they don't affect others, Kontsiwe says.

She urged patience, noting that the disease is not man-made and is causing economic setbacks.
