Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu says that the recently released crime statistics paint a worrisome picture experienced by South Africans. Speaking in Cape Town during the release of the quarterly crime statistics, of the f ourth quarter of 2023/2024, Mchunu expressed that the figures reflect a concerned nation.

These numbers tell a sobering story these numbers represent more than just figures on a page; they reflect the lived realities of our citizens-their fears, their losses, and their hopes for a safer tomorrow, says Mchunu.

Mchunu has highlighted that crime is generally on the rise , as the statistics reflect the harsh challenges faced by police on their daily efforts to protect citizens against crime. The minister highlights that the crimes that individuals need to be concerned about are murder, rape, hijacking, kidnapping for ransom payments, and extortion.

Murder is one the crimes that has been increasing rapidly as four of the nine provinces of South Africa have been recorded to have the highest number of reported murder cases namely, first is the Western Cape, followed by North-West, then the Eastern Cape, and lastly Limpopo.

Mchunu continued to divulge the murder rate per province, measured per 100,000 people. With the Eastern Cape leading at 17.6%, closely followed by the Western Cape at 15.3%, then KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) at 12.3%, and Gauteng at 8.3%.
