Former President Thabo Mbeki says he suggested the late Tito Mboweni to former President Nelson Mandela to be the Labour minister because he was the right person to take on the task of transforming the department post-apartheid.

Mbeki says Mboweni was a fitting person for the position because he understood economic labour.

65-year-old Mboweni passed away in Johannesburg hospital following a short illness on Saturday evening.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared a Special Official Funeral Category 2 in honour of the former Minister.

Mbeki was speaking in an exclusive interview with the SABC.
