Matola Raid Commemoration To Be Held At Freedom Park
The 44th Matola Raid Commemoration will take place at the Freedom Park Heritage Site in Pretoria today.
On January 30, 1981, the South African Defence Force illegally entered Mozambique, killing 15 members of the ANC's military wing, uMkhonto we Sizwe.
The attack highlighted the brutality of the apartheid regime and reinforced the UN resolution declaring apartheid a crime against humanity.
The parks CEO Doctor Jane Mufamadi says, "Today also, we remember the 14th of February which was declared the day of friendship between Mozambique and South Africa. We will start with the laying of the wreaths on the wall of the names in remembrance and honour of those who died.
"We will also have a short sermon by Reverend Nyirane and Reverend Joseph Mokatso. And then we will have an address by Dr. Snuki Zikalala who will also take us through that reflection in terms of what occurred," adds Mufamadi.
