A mass protest against escalating crime is expected to take place in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape today.

The crimes including extortion, femicide and stock theft are expected to be highlighted.

The protest march takes place a day after National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola visited the town to give an update on police intervention in the crime of extortion.

The Province's Premier, Oscar Mabuyane, has expressed satisfaction with the police reaction to the rise in extortion syndicates in the province.

Mabuyane says, "We have said we can't co-exist with thugs and we must flush them out, we must wipe them out. Our streets must be safe, women must be free, people must walk free in their communities without fear. A lot of progress has been made because we are confronting these thugs head-on."
