marhagi pupils discharged after suspected food poisoning scare

The 21 learners from the Marhagi Secondary School in Verena, near Bronkhorstspruit in Mpumalanga, have been discharged from hospital following a case of suspected food poisoning.

The learners consumed atchaar bought from a vendor outside the school premises.

The provincial Education Departments spokesperson Gerald Sambo says they will dispatch healthcare practitioners to the school today to monitor the children.

Sambo says they are waiting for results of tests from the Health Department to establish whether or not the food contained poison.

We will continue to monitor the situation very closely, in terms of making sure that there is, you know, healthcare practitioners who will be at the school to further check the learners and make sure that they support them in all the ways possible, up until we are satisfied that they are indeed healed from what they were suffering from yesterday.
